By Valerie Wallace

Heartstopper, a graphic novel series by Alice Osman, has been out on Netflix since April 22. The cast stars: Joe Locke as Charlie Spring, Kit Connor as Nick Nelson, Yasmine Finney as Elle Argen and William Xao as Tao Xu. Fans of the books are happy to see their favorite characters played by a talented cast on screen.

The show includes eight episodes of an adorable coming of age story starring an LGBTQ+ romance and many LGBTQ+ characters. It deals with concepts of love, friendship, loyalty, bullying and mental illness.

It also covers the issues that the LGBTQ+ community faces daily. Examples include: the backlash the lesbian couple, Tara and Darcy, faced after being open about their relationship, Nick coming to terms with his bisexuality, and Charlie being bullied for being the only openly gay kid at the school.

Although Netflix has not confirmed it, fans are positive there will be a second season since there are many more plot points covered in the 5 volume series.

Seeing as it’s only been out for two weeks and is already so popular, this show will definitely continue to get more love and attention. Books and shows like Heartstopper can raise awareness about the LGBTQ+ community, and shine light on things like discrimination and the hardships of coming out and accepting yourself.
