Salisbury School District: Will it Ever Return to Normal?

Some students fear next year will be just as bad

As the 2020-2021 school year is coming to an end, many questions have come up; one of these highly asked questions include will the high school students ever return 5 days a week? Although this question needs an answer, will students feel it’s too late to guarantee their learning privileges?

I am a freshman, and not only did COVID-19 take away most of my freshman year and experiences, but it also took away my ability to learn properly. Going into school 2-3 days a week isn’t the worst thing students can hope for, not one bit. But, constantly having to switch from in person to online classes was difficult, waking up at 6 a.m. one morning and then 7:30 a.m. another morning.

Because I only attend 2-3 days a week in person, those were the only days I felt I learned more and stayed more focused during class and on my work. But when I am home, I can lay in bed, doze off, start doing other things, and this ultimately takes me away from learning. Because I am not focused, this jeopardizes my school year because I’m home more than half of the time. I am home doing school when I should be in the building. I am home when I should be with people communicating face to face. I am home not learning.

As hybrid learning was a step in the right direction, I should’ve been able to go in 5 days a week because the first semester was all online. Although the first semester wasn’t terrible, the only good thing about it seemed to be the shorter classes because sitting and staring at a screen for four 80 minute classes this semester is challenging and makes it even more difficult to stay focused. And yes, this year was different for teachers too, students in other schools had the opportunity to go in and I want that opportunity. 75% of my and most students’ school year was online and learning through a screen is more difficult than most think.

I hope next year will be better. Although this school year wasn’t what I expected, I wanted it to be better than it was. Even though I was able to take part in the sports that I enjoy along with seeing some people when I was in the building, I wished this year would have given me more than just that. Wanting more and more, my hopes for next year are high and let’s see if next school year proves to be better.
