Key Club Requests Donations to the Humane Society

By Elizabeth Sirianni

Key Club is taking gift card donations for the Lehigh Valley Humane Society, which is a local animal shelter that takes in a wide range of animals. The gift cards can be worth any amount and can be from any pet store or grocery store. The cards will be dropped off to the Humane Society at the end of the month and will be used to help feed the 70 beagle puppies that they have recently taken in. The cards will also go towards the multiple birds, reptiles, and pigs that have been taken in after living in deplorable conditions. As of now the pigs are being housed at a volunteer’s house and the reptiles are waiting to be identified by experts. For both SHS teachers and students who are interested in donating, all gift cards can be given directly to Mrs. Hutchinson-Birk in room 138 during Falcon Period, or they can be placed in the envelope in the mailroom.

If you do not have any gift cards available you can donate directly to the Humane Society at 640 Dixon Street, Allentown, 18103. They are always accepting pet crates and food, non-clumping kitty litter, chew toys, towels, blankets, cat and dog beds, and office supplies. They would also greatly appreciate any cleaning supplies and/or detergent, as their supply runs out quickly after cleaning all of the cages. The shelter also offers annual membership levels in which you can give them a yearly donation ranging from $50 to $5000. You can also sign up to volunteer at the shelter simply by printing out a form on their website, filling it out, and giving it to a Humane Society employee. Some of the volunteer opportunities include but are not limited to dog walking, cat and small animal socialization, fundraising, office and computer work, special events and adoption fairs, bake sales, and yard work.

To summarize, this shelter is in desperate need of supplies and volunteers, and any contribution made is a step in the right direction for helping numerous animals.
