HUMBLE Song Review
By Jonathan Ionescu
An exciting single is released before Kendrick Lamar’s new album. Lamar usually does this before an album release. This song though, is blowing up. The last time I checked, which has not been two weeks yet, the music video has peaked to forty-five million views on YouTube, and I thought G-Eazy was just as popular/good. His newest music video only has five million, and that was released before Kendrick Lamar’s new song, “HUMBLE”.
The music video for his new song is very ironic in many ways. In the beginning, it opens up with him dressed up like the Pope, then the next scene him laying on a table with him surrounding him as he shoots money out of a cannon arrogantly.
Another scene, Lamar says he is so sick and tired of the photoshops. There is a female on the right side of a split screen covered in makeup and photoshop edits. Then when she crosses over to the left she has no makeup, hair down, no edits, just natural.
The chorus is so simple, a piano riff followed up by a simple percussion track. I like the simplicity this time. Usually there is so many instruments going on in his songs. Some people think that Kendrick Lamar is calling out other rappers in this song. For instance, Big Sean, a very popular modern rapper. However, I don’t really know too much about this since I do not listen to Big Sean regularly. I believe that the song is delivering a very strong message.
The rap game is full of other rappers with high egos, no passion in their music and arrogance. What happened to when music was an art? Now it’s full of “mumble rap”, rap when you cannot understand them and it is played over a trap beat. I personally dislike it, very much. Overall, I like the song, it is quite catchy. However, I prefer other songs that he has released.
In all, I give this song 4 💯 💯 💯 💯 out of 5 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯
