Wrestling Districts are a Success for Shane “The Frog” Simononis
By Alex Glenn
On Saturday February 25th, two of our very own falcon wrestlers qualified for wrestling districts. Their names were Shane Simononis and Jonah Nissenbaum. However, Jonah Nissenbaum didn’t make it that far. He lost his first match 12 – 4 and wouldn’t return for his second match which would disqualify him. This would put the burden of a Salisbury success story all upon the shoulders of Shane “The Frog” Simononis.
Shane started the day out strong winning his first two matches, his first one by fall in the first period against Northern Lehigh, and the second by a 9 – 3 victory over Williams Valley’s 182 lb wrestler Reibach. This would guarantee The Frog’s place in the semi-finals which will happen at Wilson West Lawn high school on March 3rd.
After clinching his place in the semi-finals, Shane’s journey to states would hit a road bump. The Frog would go against the #1 wrestler in the state at 182 lbs Jared Mooney. Shane would lose this bout 11 – 4. This match placed Shane in the final district match for 3rd and 4th. Unfortunately It was during this match Shane injured his knee so he was unable to finish the match. Luckily he will be returning for the semi-finals.
Even though his two last matches didn’t go as planned, Shane’s dream of becoming state champion is still alive. He remains 4th seed going into regionals. Let’s hope he is successful.
