Auston Matthews: NHL Phenomenon
By CJ Wittman
With the NHL debut last Wednesday, viewers around the world were excited to see what this season would bring. The number 1 overall pick in the NHL draft Auston Matthews helped contribute to an opening day that many won’t forget. The 19 year old Toronto Maple Leaf became the first player to score four goals in an NHL debut. He accomplished this by the end of the second period in Ottawa, against the Senators.
Matthews’ first three shots as an NHL hockey play went in the net. An incredible night for the rookie in his first game, he is the just the fifth player to score three goals in an NHL debut since the 1943-44 season. His electrifying performance stood out to NHL fans and was buzzing all over social media.
From his early years, Auston Matthews made it clear that professional hockey would be his goal. His family chose a different route for the young prospect. Instead of playing in a junior league or playing in college, they let him spend a year playing professionally for the Zurich Lions in Switzerland. This decision proved to help him develop as a player and also improve in other areas on the ice.
Matthews’ performance in his first NHL game has many thinking what he has to bring for the rest of the season. With an outstanding debut, if he plays how he did in his first game, Auston is surely due for a good year.
