2016 Teen Fads
By Claudia Crouthamel
Throughout generations, teenage fads have come and gone. Today, we are going to take a look on what is happening in the teen world and what kinds of fads are the new hot topics in 2016. In the past months, a lot of new and interesting things have been popping up on social media, and they have everyone going crazy. These fads include “Binge-watching” Netflix, Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts, Yeezys, hover boards and Snapchat. All of these different fads were huge in 2015 and will continue to be popular throughout 2016.
Binge-watching Netflix is the new term for watching TV episodes on Netflix for an extended amount of time. This has been huge in the last year, and whenever teenagers have some free time this is what they decide to do. Some people can watch a whole TV series in one day, which takes a lot of dedication.
Another fad is coffee from Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. You can not walk around school without seeing someone holding a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts drink. You also can’t check Snapchat without seeing someone showing off their drink(s).
One of the hottest and most wanted things of 2015/2016 is Kanye West’s Adidas shoes called Yeezy Boosts. These shoes literally sell within seconds of being released online, and when people do get their hands on a pair they sell them for $2000. People would do anything to get their hands on a pair of Kanye West’s Yeezy Boosts.
Another hot fad that started in 2015 was the hoverboard. These are basically electronic skateboards. People of all ages ride these things everywhere if it is on a college campus, throughout the house, in the mall or throughout your neighborhood. However, after being one of the hottest Christmas gifts of 2015, some hoverboards have caught fire, and there have been many injuries due to people falling off the boards, so new safety standards for the boards may be put in place.
The last of the teenage fads has changed the way people talk and communicate on their phone: Snapchat. Snapchat is an app for your phone where you can send your friends pictures of you or of your surroundings back and forth and have a conversation. It is kind of like texting, but your friend can see your facial expressions, or the subject matter you are discussing. Snapchat also has cool geofilters that can be used when you go to a cool new place, along with different filters for your facial expressions.
Throughout the years, the fads change and after some time passes these fads go out of style. When we are older, we’ll probably be wondering what we were thinking for liking certain things. But for now, we teenagers should enjoy these fads and continue binge-watching Netflix while drinking our Starbucks coffee and Snapchatting our friends.
