Monthly Archives: February 2016

Horoscope Weekly: Feb. 29 – Mar. 6

By Samantha Perkins

Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19) – Think about scheduling a physical activity for Monday, like going for a long jog or spending a few hours at the gym. You may feel a little frustrated by the evening, and that may be the best outlet to release that frustration. Consider putting other people first during the course of the week. You might find that you need to overcome your usual competitiveness if you want to get ahead. Seek out some quiet time at the end of the week, because you’ve got a lot on your mind and you may want some time to sort things out. Over the weekend, seek out some adventure! You could use some fun.

Taurus (Apr 20-May 20) – The first half of your week looks to be pretty good, Taurus. Monday looks to be a lot of fun, as you’re surrounded by friends and seem to be radiating charm. This good vibe continues into Tuesday and Wednesday, even though it might be more low-key. Your typical home or work routine may be shaken up by the introduction of something new, so look forward to that. However, the week may not end as well as it began. Something(s) may cause your usual patience to be tested, and it may be wise to avoid taking risks over the weekend.

Salisbury Football/ Cheerleading Banquet

By CJ Wittman

The Salisbury football team and cheerleaders attended the annual banquet on the 21st of February at the Brookside Country Club. During this banquet, players and coaches from both the varsity team and middle school team met together to celebrate their great seasons. The middle school football team and varsity team both finished the regular season with a record of 7-3.

The banquet started off with an impressive highlight film of the varsity football team.  After the film was shown, awards were distributed to cheerleaders. Kierra Burda and Maddy Horn won MVP for the 2015 season.

After the cheerleading awards were handed out, Coach Cerco began to talk about the varsity football team. In summary, Coach Cerco stated how the program had completely turned around.  The Falcons, this year, had something to be proud of. Coach Cerco ended his speech by handing out letters and individual awards. Seven players were honored by the Colonial League by making either all-league, all-area, or all-state. This is the most the football program has had in over ten years. The seniors said some words about their future and possible college plans. Senior Alex Kubinec was nominated for scholar athlete proving his dominance on the field and in the classroom.

The awards were followed up by a buffet, which included salads, chicken alfredo, veal parmesan, green beans, and bread. Ice cream and cake were served after the meal. It proved to be a fun night for the Salisbury Falcons football and cheerleading teams.

New York Fashion Week: February 2016

By Claudia Crouthamel

Another New York Fashion Week took place from February 10th to the 18th. This fashion week showed off all of the top fall and winter fashions for 2016. Every fashion expert and celebrity was at New York Fashion Week showing off their amazing street styles and looking for new styles for the upcoming seasons. The most anticipated shows at New York fashion week were Alexander Wang, Vera Wang, Rag & Bone, Marc Jacobs, Oscar De La Renta, Givenchy, and Kanye West’s Fashion Show Season 3.

This February’s New York Fashion Week showcased many different styles that will be all over the place in the fall and winter seasons. This Fashion Week had some new styles but also had some repeats from 2015 fall/winter season, just with new ways to wear these trends. This year, trends include some retro references, shades of blue, sparkly garments, coats and jackets, items with intricate detail, and items that could be worn on a man or a woman.

The first big trend that you should be looking out for is pieces that have retro references. All over the runway this year there were references to the 60s and 70s. This fall and winter we did see some retro trends such as fringes, but this time more bold fashion trends will once again be popular. Next fall and winter the high-waisted jeans and wide-legged pants will be making a comeback, along with wide brim hats, patchwork prints, floral boho dresses, blouses with a bow at the neck, and an array of silky shirts and dresses.

A color that will be big next fall and winter will be all kinds of tones of blue, aqua, denim, and teal. Other color worn on the runway were vibrant blood reds, jet blacks, and crisp whites. The runway also had a lot of garments including shirts, pants, and dresses that were embellished with statement stones and large sequins. Be sure to escape from plain-colored apparel and try out to a new color scheme next year.

The last trend that was all over NYFW were garments that had very intricate details. These garments had a lot of texture and definitely made a statement on the runway. You will see a lot of these trends in everyone’s closets next fall and winter. Try something different and step out of your comfort zone. Maybe you’ll even start your own trend!

Falcon Cup Coin Competition

By Grant Hadian

Salisbury Government Advisory (SGA) is sponsoring a Class Coin Competition for Falcon Cup points. If you do not know what Falcon Cup points are, they are a school spirit point system between all four grades of SHS.

The competition works in a way that a class can gain points and make another class lose their points. Every coin (penny, dime, nickel, quarter) counts as a positive contribution to the contests. And every paper bill ($1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100) counts as a negative contribution to the class you place the money into. $5 in other classes jar equals 5 less points for the class. There is a catch to this competition, there are no rules on what class you can put money in. This mean you can sabotage your class or other classes.

Each grade/faculty will be represented by a faculty member who will have a consequence if their represented class comes in last: the faculty representative must wear the Salisbury Falcon mascot costume and teach in it all day. The teachers who are representing classes are Mrs. Kennedy for 9th grade, Mr. Barna for 10th grade, Mr. Pacitti for 11th grade, Mr. Frick for 12th grade, and Mrs. Bruns for faculty. This allows students to help other classes to see a specific teacher lose and wear the costume the whole day.

Participating in the Falcon Cup Coin Competition is not only fun and beneficial to winning the Falcon Cup, but will also help a charity. All of the money from the competition goes to a charity. Last year, the Falcon Cup Coin Competition raised $500 for the Keystone Wounded Warrior Program and it is hoped that a similar or greater amount of money is raised this year for the chosen charity.

Wear Orange on 2/26 to Support SADD

By Agostino D’ancona

February is not only a month of love, but also a month to raise awareness for Teen Dating Violence. Teen dating violence may seem unbelievable, but it happens more often than you think. About one in three teens in the U.S. experience physical, sexual or emotional abuse from the person they are dating. Our SADD chapter here at Salisbury has been spreading the word to wear orange this Friday to show support to end and spread awareness about teen dating violence.  SADD has also set up a display case in the main hallway by the library with pictures and statistics about teen dating violence awareness.

SADD strongly encourages you to wear some sort of orange this Friday, whether it’s a t-shirt or something as subtle as nail polish. SADD has also shared this link with students to check out what qualifies as teen dating violence and they encourage everyone to look at this link so they can be more aware of what it really is.

Album Review: The Life of Pablo

By Matthew Jordan

From So Help Me God, SWISH, and Waves, the long and anticipated wait is finally over. After 3 long years, artist Kanye West has finally released his brand new album titled The Life of Pablo. Yeezy released his album on February 11th during a show he held at Madison Square Garden called Yeezy Szn 3. The show was a debut for not only his album but also for his new  upcoming clothing line.

The album contains 18 tracks with features from Chance the Rapper, Chris Brown, Young Thug, Frank Ocean and many more. Not only did everyone feel hype for him releasing his music but the feature Kanye had with Frank Ocean made everyone excited. It has been 4 years since Frank released an album and he has stated that he was to release one in late 2015 but that never happened. The internet was in outrage that Kanye got Frank to do a feature before Frank released an album.

People have said the story of the album is something the old Kanye would release. It contains a deep story of his life, his growth in faith with God, and him finding his true self. The top songs throughout the album are “Ultralight Beam,” “FML,” “Father Stretch My Hands part 1,” and “Real Friends.” In the song “Ultralight Beam,” Kanye explains the incident that occurred with St. Paul the Apostle. St. Paul was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christians but a bright light shined upon him which was God. He remained sightless for three days before regaining his sight and dedicating his life to serving the Lord. He wrote 13 of the 27 books of the New Testament and is considered the one of the most influential figures in the early church. His writings dominated much of Christian theology. This song is by far my favorite song of the album. Others will like the song for Chance the Rapper’s verse but, the story behind the song is what I enjoy about it. The song states, “You persecute the weak/Because it makes you feel so strong (To save)/Dont have much strength to fight/So I look to the light/You persecute the weak/Because it makes you feel so strong (To save)/Don’t have much strength to fight/So I look to the light (War)/To make these wrongs turn right Head up high,/I look to the light/Hey, cause I know that you’ll make everything alright.” Those lyrics state that if you are in any time of need, always look toward the light because God almighty will always be there for you no matter the situation. He will look after you when you need him and He wants any individual to rejoice in the name of the Lord.

For the song FML, people believe the song stands for “**** My Life,” while others believe it means “For My Lady.” The song explains the struggle he is in trying to stay loyal to his wife and him trying to keep his self-control. Stating “ I been waiting for a minute/For my lady/So I can’t jeopardize that for one of these hoes I been living without limits/As far as my business/I’m the only one that’s in control/I been feeling all I’ve given/For my children I will die for those I love/God, I’m willing/To make this my mission /Give up the women.”

For the song “Father Stretch My Hands,” I mainly like the song from the beat and tone of the rappers. Kid Cudi and Kanye provide a singing beat which brings a positive upbeat vibe toward the listener. In the song, Kanye reflects on a time he had an argument with a girl he truly loved, but he came to a realize nothing is more important than wanting to wake up next to her. Stating “She looking like she owe you some/You know just what we want/I want to wake up with you in my eyes … /If I ever instigated I’m sorry.” “Real Friends” is a song that reaches the artist on a very personal level. Since he is described as one of the most impactful artists of our generation, he explains from reaching this level of success, he has not been the same around his family and friends. His family is given a backseat, and his job becomes his priority. In the song he states, “I’m a deadbeat cousin, I hate family reunions./…, I’m drinkin’ at the communion,” explaining how he is wasting his time at these events and could be doing something much more productive than spending time with family. He also states, “When was the last time I remembered a birthday? / When was the last time I wasn’t in a hurry?”

With the last three years being teasers and snippets of this album, the anticipation was very high, and he did not disappoint. The story behind the album that Kanye produced was a side of Kanye we have not seen in a very long time. Overall, this album was one of the best albums Kanye released in a very long time. He goes onto a personal level describing his difficulties he recently faced and with him growing in his faith with God. This album deserves five fuegos on the Mat Jordan Fire Fuego Scale. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (Five out of Five)

President Obama Visits Cuba

By Daniel Bonge

It has been 88 years since a U.S. President has visited Cuba. President Obama’s decision to travel to Cuba next month to meet with Cuban President Raúl Castro is a surprise that is making history in his final year in office. The Cuban Missile crisis came to a close in 1962, when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove Russian missiles from Cuba in exchange for a promise from the United States to respect Cuba’s territorial sovereignty during the Cold War. Since then, the United States has not been able to enter Cuban territory.

President Obama was hoping for the power of his office to help persuade Castro to do more to open his mostly state-run economy and to respect the human rights policies of the United States. The Cuban leader has been unwilling to take those steps since the two presidents announced in December 2014 that they would move toward normalized relations after a half-century of hostility. President Obama believes he can persuade Castro if he visits and talks to him. This trip would show concrete progression towards normalization between United States and Cuba. Obama will not be seeing Fidel Castro, the man behind the 1959 revolution that led to the rupture with the United States.

There are many people who support President Obama and his decision, and many people who oppose it. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a Republican presidential candidate, released a letter to Mr. Obama urging him to reconsider the trip. “Having an American president go to Cuba simply for the sake of going there, without the United States getting anything in return, is both counterproductive and damaging to our national security interests,” Mr. Rubio wrote. “You will send the message to the oppressed Cuban people that you stand with their oppressors.”

President Obama will be the first president to visit Cuba since Calvin Coolidge went in 1928. The president also plans to use the trip to highlight his efforts to foster closer ties with the rest of Latin America. After Cuba, President Obama will travel to Argentina to meet the new president, Mauricio Macri, who has said he wants to improve relations with the United States. This historic trip will likely begin an era of peace between two historically opposed countries.
